Who Are the Hoosier Helpers?

May 16

If you’ve ever spied the words Hoosier Helper emblazoned on the side of a van or a large truck’s cab and wondered – What the heck is that? – you are not alone. Hoosier Helpers is actually a good Samaritan program run by the State of Indiana’s Department of Transportation (DOT) that is sponsored by GEICO and is designed to promote traffic safety throughout Indiana’s metropolitan areas.

If you’ve been injured by another driver’s negligence in a traffic accident, seek the professional legal guidance of an experienced Indiana car accident attorney as soon after the accident as possible.

The Pillars of the Program

The Hoosier Helpers program is based on the following three basic pillars of aid, including:

  • Improving the overall safety of the interstates themselves
  • Providing roadside assistance for those involved in traffic accidents
  • Providing medical aid and assistance with traffic control at accident sites

How Hoosier Helpers May Help You

There are many different instances in which Hoosier Helpers are prepared to swoop in and help, including:

  • If you run out of gas en route to your destination, a Hoosier Helper can provide you with the fuel you need to make your way to a gas station.
  • If you have a flat, a Hoosier Helper can help with that.
  • Hoosier Helpers are also prepared to help you make minor repairs if a car problem leaves you on the side of the road.
  • The Hoosier Helpers also help remove the debris generated by accidents from the roadway as swiftly and safely as possible.
  • In the event of an emergency, the Hoosier Helpers can even provide medical assistance.

Hoosier Helpers are also called upon to report the causes of traffic holdups to the state’s DOT Traffic Management Center and to identify dangerous potholes that are in need of repair.

Because Hoosiers Helper aid the Indiana State Police and other first responders when accidents on our roadways arise, they receive extensive training in all the following:

  • Emergency medicine, including first aid, the use of defibrillators, CPR, and more
  • Calling and communicating with medical helicopters
  • HAZMAT training

Where You Can Find Hoosier Helpers

To date, Hoosier Helpers operate in all the following coverage areas:

  1. 103 miles around the Indianapolis metropolitan area
  2. 34 miles near Gary
  3. 40 miles around Southern Indiana (near Louisville)

How It’s Helping

Studies indicate that the Hoosier Helper program is cost-efficient, especially in relation to cleanups after accidents (and an attendant reduction in secondary traffic accidents). Just like the Hoosier Helpers, your dedicated car accident attorney is committed to helping you in the event you are injured by someone else’s negligence in a car accident.
